1. What this page does #

This page sets out, in full, the Quran passages that deal with war, fighting, enemies and punishment: the verses Islamists use. It covers Muhammad's military career as the earliest Islamic sources record it, the verses that terrorist groups actually cite, and what research shows about how young men are drawn from these texts into violence.

How to read the passages.

  • Translation. Every passage is quoted in Marmaduke Pickthall's translation, The Meaning of the Glorious Koran (1930), one of the most widely used English versions, now out of copyright. The text was retrieved verse by verse from the Pickthall edition on the AlQuran Cloud service.1
  • Meccan and Medinan. Muslim tradition divides the Quran's 114 chapters (surahs) into those revealed in Mecca (about 610 to 622), when Muhammad was a persecuted preacher with no army, and those revealed in Medina (622 to 632), when he was the ruler of a state at war. Of the 71 passages below, 70 come from Medinan surahs. Almost all the fighting verses are Medinan.
  • Abrogation. Classical scholars held that some later verses cancel (naskh) earlier ones. Many classical exegetes held that verse 9:5, the "verse of the sword" (ayat al-sayf), abrogated dozens of earlier verses counselling patience and tolerance.2 That doctrine is central to how jihadists read the text.
  • Context. Many fighting verses refer to specific battles against specific enemies. Islamists read them as standing orders for all time. The page gives the text and records who has used it and how.

2. The findings in brief #

  1. The Quran contains many explicit commands to fight and kill. They include "slay the idolaters wherever ye find them" (9:5), "fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture… until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low" (9:29), "smite the necks" (8:12) and "smiting of the necks" (47:4), and "warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you" (2:216). They are quoted in full below.
  2. Muhammad was a military commander as well as a preacher. The earliest biography records 27 raids he led in person and 38 more he sent out. It also records the execution of the men of a Jewish tribe, the Banu Qurayza, numbering 600 to 900, and killings of named critics that he ordered.34
  3. Jihadist groups draw on a small, consistent set of verses. Bin Laden, the Islamic State and al-Qaeda's English-language propaganda repeatedly cite 9:5, 9:29, 9:36, 8:39, 8:60, 2:216, 4:74–76, 9:111 and 47:4 (section 4).
  4. Preachers are central to radicalisation, and most recruits know little Islam. Convicted clerics and online preachers such as Abu Hamza, Anjem Choudary and Anwar al-Awlaki are linked to large numbers of terrorism cases. But Islamic State's own intake records show 70% of recruits had only "basic" knowledge of Sharia (section 5).
  5. The texts are the foundation of jihadism. Jihadist ideology is built from these verses and from classical law, and spread by preachers through networks.

3. Muhammad: preacher, ruler and commander #

The sources. Almost everything known about Muhammad's life comes from the Quran, the hadith collections, and the biography (sira) of Ibn Ishaq (died about 767), about 135 years after Muhammad's death. Ibn Ishaq's work survives in the edited version by Ibn Hisham (died 833), translated into English by Alfred Guillaume as The Life of Muhammad (1955).35 These are the sources Muslims themselves rely on. Some Western historians question how much of them is reliable, but they are the only detailed record, and they are the texts jihadists quote.

Mecca, 610 to 622: a preacher without an army. For his first twelve years as a prophet, Muhammad preached in Mecca and was persecuted by its ruling tribe, the Quraysh. Ibn Ishaq records that before the second pledge of 'Aqaba (622) he had no permission to fight and was ordered only "to endure insult and forgive the ignorant."3 Meccan passages such as "repel the evil deed with one which is better" (41:34) and "when the foolish ones address them answer: Peace" (25:63) date from this period.

Medina, 622 to 632: ruler and commander. After the migration (hijra) to Medina in 622, Muhammad became the head of a community and then a state. The first verse permitting fighting, "Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged" (22:39), is dated to this time.3

  • Raids and battles. Ibn Ishaq counts 27 expeditions that Muhammad led personally, fighting in nine of them, and 38 that he sent out under others.3 Hadith reports give a lower figure of 19 campaigns (Sahih al-Bukhari 3949; Sahih Muslim 1814).6 The early raids targeted Meccan trade caravans. In early 624, at Nakhla, his men killed a Meccan in a sacred month, when fighting was forbidden; the Quran responded that "to turn (men) from the way of Allah… is a greater" wrong (2:217).3
  • The major battles. Badr (624), a Muslim victory that the Quran attributes to angels (3:123–126, 8:9–12); Uhud (625), a defeat (3:152–155); the Trench (627), a siege of Medina that failed (33:9–11); the Treaty of Hudaybiyya with Mecca (628); the conquest of the Jewish oasis of Khaybar (628); the taking of Mecca (630); and the expeditions to Hunayn and Tabuk (630).7
  • The Jewish tribes of Medina. Two tribes, the Banu Qaynuqa and the Banu Nadir, were expelled (Sahih al-Bukhari 4028; Quran 59:2–5).6 After the siege of the Trench, the third tribe, the Banu Qurayza, was accused of treachery. The arbiter Sa'd ibn Mu'adh ruled that their warriors be killed and their women and children taken captive, and Muhammad approved the ruling (Sahih al-Bukhari 4121, 3043).6 Ibn Ishaq says the men were beheaded in trenches in the Medina market, "600 or 700 in all, though some put the figure as high as 800 or 900."3 Quran 33:26 refers to the event: "some ye slew, and ye made captive some." The historian W. N. Arafat argued in 1976 that the mass execution was a later exaggeration; M. J. Kister rebutted him in 1986. W. Montgomery Watt treated it as a political punishment for treason rather than religious persecution.8
  • Killings of critics. The hadith record that Muhammad asked, "Who is willing to kill Ka'b bin al-Ashraf who has hurt Allah and His Apostle?", and permitted the men who volunteered to deceive Ka'b in order to reach him (Sahih al-Bukhari 4037; Sahih Muslim 1801).6 Bukhari 4039 records the killing of another opponent, Abu Rafi'. Ibn Ishaq also records the killing of a poet, 'Asma' bint Marwan, after Muhammad asked "Who will rid me of Marwan's daughter?", and of Abu 'Afak. Muslim hadith critics, including al-Albani, reject those two reports as weakly transmitted.39
  • The taking of Mecca (630). Muhammad entered Mecca with little bloodshed and granted a general amnesty. Commanders were ordered to fight only those who resisted, except for a list of named individuals who were to be killed even if found at the Kaaba, among them 'Abdullah ibn Khatal and two singing-girls who had mocked him (Ibn Ishaq; Sahih al-Bukhari 3044; Sunan al-Nasa'i 4067, which names "four men and two women").36

How historians read him. W. Montgomery Watt's classic Muhammad at Medina (1956) presents a "prophet and statesman" whose wars were those of an Arabian ruler of his time.10 Critics such as Robert Spencer (The Truth About Muhammad, 2006), relying on the same biographies and hadith, present him as a warlord whose example licenses violence. All agree on the basic record: after 622 Muhammad fought, commanded and ruled, and the texts that record this are treated by Muslims as sacred history and as a model.

4. The verses terrorists quote #

4.1 What the counting studies show #

Four studies have counted the Quran verses in jihadist material. They agree that jihadists draw overwhelmingly on a few chapters revealed at Medina during Muhammad's wars: Surahs 9, 8, 4, 2 and 3.

  • Arizona State University (2012) analysed more than 2,000 al-Qaeda-era texts from 1998 to 2011 and catalogued 1,511 verse citations.11
  • Frissen and colleagues (2018) counted about 700 Quran references in all 15 issues of Islamic State's magazine Dabiq. The most cited verses were 8:39 (12 times), 5:51 (11), 59:14 (9) and 9:5 (9).12
  • Donald Holbrook (2010) examined 30 English-language militant texts by figures including Abdullah Azzam, Muhammad Faraj, Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Anwar al-Awlaki. The most used passages were 4:74–76 (in 9 of the 30 texts), 4:84 (6), and 9:5, 9:13–15, 9:38–39 and 9:111 (5 each).13
  • The Tony Blair Institute found that Salafi-jihadi texts contain five times as many Quran references as mainstream Islamic texts, and that only 8% of the 50 verses jihadists quote most are prominent in mainstream Muslim material. 8:60, with its call to "dismay the enemy of Allah", was among the most quoted.14

4.3 The "verse of the sword" and abrogation #

The doctrine that turns these verses from history into standing orders is abrogation. Many classical scholars, including the influential commentator Ibn Kathir (died 1373), called 9:5 "the Ayah of the Sword" and held that it cancelled earlier verses of patience and peace treaties with non-Muslims.23 One medieval scholar, Ibn Salama (died 1019), is reported to have counted 124 verses abrogated by it, while the later scholar al-Suyuti (died 1505) accepted only about 20 abrogations in the entire Quran.24

Modern jihadists built directly on this. Muhammad abd al-Salam Faraj, whose pamphlet The Neglected Duty (1981) justified the assassination of Egypt's president Anwar Sadat, has a section headed "The Verse of the Sword". There he quotes Ibn Kathir that 9:5 "abrogated every treaty" and cites classical counts of 114 abrogated verses.18 Sayyid Qutb's Milestones (1964) set out four stages of jihad, from patience in Mecca (4:77), to permission to fight (22:39), to defensive war (2:190), to war on all unbelievers (9:36, 9:29). He argued that only the final stage now applies.21

Many modern Muslim scholars reject this reading. They argue that 9:5 refers to specific Arabian tribes that had broken treaties (9:4 and 9:7 exempt those who kept faith), that the very next verse (9:6) orders protection for any idolater who asks for it, and that the sword verse did not cancel the Quran's limits on war.25

5. From text to violence: how young men are radicalised #

The question is how these verses become a warrant for killing. The research points to three things working together: the texts, the preachers who interpret them, and the young men who are looking for what the preachers offer.

5.1 The texts matter #

Scholars who study jihadism closely increasingly argue that its religious content should be taken seriously. Graeme Wood's investigation for The Atlantic (March 2015) concluded: "The reality is that the Islamic State is Islamic. Very Islamic." He quoted the Princeton scholar Bernard Haykel, who said that Muslims who call the group un-Islamic are "embarrassed and politically correct, with a cotton-candy view of their own religion."26 Shiraz Maher's history of the ideology (2016) traces its core doctrines through the medieval jurist Ibn Taymiyya and the classical texts.27 A study that interviewed 20 Western foreign fighters in Syria found little evidence of economic grievance: their answers "revolved around" religious belief.28 Thomas Hegghammer's Jihadi Culture (2017) shows that religious practice, including chanting, poetry and the interpretation of dreams, sustains militants' commitment day to day.29

5.2 The preachers matter #

In Britain, a small number of preachers stand behind a large share of Islamist terrorism.

  • Abu Hamza al-Masri, imam of Finsbury Park mosque, was convicted in 2006 of soliciting the murder of non-Muslims and stirring up racial hatred. In 2015 a US court sentenced him to life for terrorism offences.30
  • Abdullah el-Faisal, a Jamaican-born preacher active in Britain, was jailed in the UK for soliciting murder and in 2023 was sentenced in New York to 18 years for supporting Islamic State.31
  • Anjem Choudary and his network, al-Muhajiroun, were linked to 25% of all Islamist terrorism offenders in the UK from 1998 to 2015, according to the Henry Jackson Society. Hope not Hate linked at least 70 people convicted of terrorism offences or who carried out suicide attacks to the network.32 Choudary was sentenced to life in 2024.33
  • Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-Yemeni preacher killed in 2011, is linked by the Counter Extremism Project to 99 extremists in the US and Europe.34 In 2010 Roshonara Choudhry, a student, stabbed the MP Stephen Timms after watching Awlaki's sermons online.35
  • Online, the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation found that Western foreign fighters in Syria treated preachers such as Ahmad Musa Jibril and Musa Cerantonio as "spiritual authorities" who gave their fight "religious legitimacy".36

Why preachers have power. The sociologist Quintan Wiktorowicz spent months inside al-Muhajiroun. He found that its founder, Omar Bakri Muhammad, held recruits because of his "sacred authority": his standing as a religious scholar persuaded young men to accept risky activism they would not otherwise have taken on.37 A preacher who can tell a young man what Allah requires of him holds a kind of authority no ordinary recruiter has. Radical preachers gain followers, status and influence from exercising it. No research found measures their income.

5.3 The recruits #

The evidence on the recruits themselves complicates any simple account.

  • Most know little Islam. Islamic State's own intake forms for about 4,030 foreign recruits, leaked in 2016, recorded 70% as having only "basic" knowledge of Sharia, 24% intermediate and 5% advanced.38
  • MI5's own research on several hundred British cases, leaked in 2008, found that many terrorists "do not practise their faith regularly" and "could be regarded as religious novices", and that "a well-established religious identity actually protects against violent radicalisation."39
  • Two young men from Birmingham who went to fight in Syria in 2013 bought Islam for Dummies and The Koran for Dummies before they left.40
  • The French scholar Olivier Roy argues that European jihadists are mostly second-generation immigrants and converts with "practically no religious education", and that the process is an "Islamisation of radicalism", a youth revolt that adopts Islamic language. Gilles Kepel argues the opposite: a "radicalisation of Islam", driven by the spread of Salafi ideology. The two positions have not been reconciled.41
  • Marc Sageman's study of about 500 cases found that friends and relatives usually radicalise each other in small groups, the "bunch of guys" pattern.42

5.4 Assessment #

The evidence supports part of the claim that jihadism grows out of the Quran and is driven by clerics. The ideology is built from real verses and classical rulings, which it quotes accurately. It is spread by preachers whose religious authority gives them power over young followers, and a handful of British preachers are linked to a large share of the country's Islamist terrorism.

In practice, that points to preachers and networks rather than to readers of the Quran in general. Prosecuting preachers who incite violence, as Britain did with Abu Hamza, el-Faisal and Choudary, has proved effective. So has banning their organisations and removing their material online.

The scale today. The Global Terrorism Index 2026 recorded 5,582 deaths from terrorism in 2025. About 70% were caused by four jihadist groups: Islamic State, JNIM, the Pakistani Taliban and al-Shabaab. More than half of all deaths were in the Sahel.43 MI5 says about 75% of its counter-terrorism caseload is Islamist.44 At 31 March 2026, 58% of the 273 people in British custody for terrorism offences were classed as Islamist.45

6. Did Islam spread by the sword? #

This question has two different answers, depending on whether it is about the spread of Muslim rule or the spread of the Muslim religion.

Muslim rule spread by conquest, and fast. Within two years of Muhammad's death in 632, his successor Abu Bakr had fought the Ridda ("apostasy") wars against Arabian tribes that had renounced Islam or refused to pay the alms tax, and forced them back into the fold.46 Arab armies then took Syria and Palestine (634–638), Iraq and Iran (636–651) and Egypt (639–642). North Africa was taken over about 60 years (from 647 to around 709), Spain from 711, and parts of Central Asia and Sindh by the 710s.47 Within about 120 years, Muslim rule stretched from the Atlantic to the borders of China. That spread was military.

Conversion within the conquered lands was slow. Classical law generally forbade forcing Jews and Christians to convert, because they could pay the jizya instead (Quran 9:29). The historian Hugh Kennedy concludes that the conquerors wanted tribute and obedience more than converts, and that mass conversion followed two to three centuries later.47 Richard Bulliet's study of Muslim names in biographical dictionaries estimated that Muslims became a majority in Iran around the middle of the ninth century, roughly two centuries after the conquest.48 The pressures to convert were real: non-Muslims paid the jizya and faced legal restrictions, and converts gained tax relief and access to power. Coercion also occurred at particular times. The Fatimid caliph al-Hakim (996–1021) destroyed churches and synagogues, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 1009, and forced conversions.49 Later Ottoman practice included the devshirme, the levy of Christian boys from the Balkans who were converted and trained as soldiers and officials.50

Much of the Muslim world was never conquered by Muslim armies. Indonesia, now the largest Muslim country, converted from the thirteenth century onward through traders, Sufi preachers and the conversion of local rulers.51 Islam spread in West Africa across the Sahara by trade, and in East Africa along the Indian Ocean coast.52 In Bengal, which today holds most of the Muslims of Bangladesh, Richard Eaton argues that conversion followed land clearance and settlement under Sufi-led communities, not forced conversion, even though the region had been conquered earlier.53

Assessment. The claim that Islam spread by the sword is accurate for the first century, when Muslim rule was imposed by conquest over a vast area. It is not accurate as a description of how most people became Muslim: that took centuries under Muslim rule, driven by incentives and pressures more than by forced conversion, and across much of Asia and Africa it happened through trade and preaching without conquest. Historians on both sides of the debate agree on the conquests. They disagree about how much force drove the later conversions.

7. Popular claims tested #

Many people learn about Muhammad and the Quran from podcasts and videos rather than the sources. This section tests 30 claims made in one widely shared 2026 interview, with the author Bill Federer on the Truth Unleashed podcast, against the primary texts and standard histories. Eleven were accurate, twelve partly accurate, and seven false or unsupported. The accurate claims are the stronger for being separated from the rest.

7.1 Accurate #

Claim What the sources say
Khadija tested whether the spirit was an angel by having Muhammad sit on her thighs and lap and then removing her veil Recorded by Ibn Ishaq (Guillaume, p. 107)54

"I have been ordered to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah" Sahih al-Bukhari 25; Sahih Muslim 2156
Hadith describe Muhammad as white Sahih al-Bukhari 63 and 1031. Bukhari 3547 says he was "neither very white nor deep brown"; the Arabic denotes fair skin, not race in the modern sense.56

7.2 Partly accurate #

Claim Correction
Muhammad fought in 66 battles and raids Ibn Ishaq gives 27 led in person and 38 sent out, 65 in all. Hadith give 19.3
He killed an estimated 3,000 people No source for this total was found. The Banu Qurayza executions alone account for 600 to 900.3
He had 11 to 22 wives and concubines Usually counted as 11 to 13 wives plus two concubines, Rayhana and Mariya; longer lists include contracts never consummated.58
The slander of Aisha created the rule that rape requires four witnesses The incident is linked to Quran 24:4 and 24:11–13, which require four witnesses to accuse someone of unlawful sex. They say nothing about rape.55
"Muhammad" is the most popular baby name in Europe It has been the top boys' name in England and Wales since 2023 (5,957 boys in 2025), counting all spellings. It is not the top name across Europe.59
Honour killings are part of Islam No school of law prescribes them. Classical Shafi'i law does exempt a parent who kills a child from the death penalty. The UK Home Office estimates about 12 honour killings a year.60
Nissar Hussain, a convert to Christianity, was attacked in Bradford True: on 17 November 2015 he was beaten with a pickaxe handle outside his home. Convictions could not be confirmed.61
The first purpose-built US mosque opened in Highland Park, Detroit, in 1921, drawing on Ford workers It opened on 8 June 1921 near Ford's plant and is "perhaps the first"; there are rival claims (Maine 1915, North Dakota 1929).62
The Quran describes the Trinity as God, Mary and Jesus 5:116 has Jesus asked whether he told people to take "me and my mother for two gods beside Allah". It does not define the Christian Trinity; scholars differ on its meaning.55
Taqiyya is "sacred lying" to spread Islam Taqiyya means concealing one's faith under threat, mainly a Shia doctrine. Hadith do permit deception in war ("War is deceit", Bukhari 3030) and in two other cases (Muslim 2605).5663

7.3 False or unsupported #

Claim What the evidence shows
Mary the Copt was captured She was sent as a gift by the Byzantine governor of Egypt, al-Muqawqis, around 628.5458
Under Sharia a raped woman must produce four witnesses or be whipped Not classical law: Malik held there is "no punishment" for a woman who is raped. It did happen under Pakistan's 1979 Hudood Ordinance until the 2006 reform. The Maliki school's treatment of pregnancy as evidence of zina has also led to women being charged.64
Muslim women in Europe average five children Pew's figure is 2.6, against 1.6 for non-Muslims.65

Hubal was a moon god A 1900s theory rejected by later scholarship.69

8. The 71 passages #

Each passage is quoted in full in Pickthall's translation, with its surah, whether it was revealed at Mecca or Medina, and notes on context and use. Numbers in bold within each quotation are verse numbers. Use the search box at the top of the page to find any word or verse.1

8.1 Commands to fight (24 passages) #

Passages that permit, command or urge fighting. Almost all are Medinan.

1. Quran 22:39–40 · Surah Al-Hajj · Medinan

39 Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory;

40 Those who have been driven from their homes unjustly only because they said: Our Lord is Allah - For had it not been for Allah's repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of Allah is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down. Verily Allah helpeth one who helpeth Him. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty -

Note: Traditionally the first revelation permitting fighting, after the migration to Medina.3

2. Quran 2:190 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

190 Fight in the way of Allah against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! Allah loveth not aggressors.

Note: Used in 4 of Holbrook's 30 texts. Its instruction "begin not hostilities" is cited by those who argue the Quran permits only defensive war.13

3. Quran 2:191 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

191 And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. And fight not with them at the Inviolable Place of Worship until they first attack you there, but if they attack you (there) then slay them. Such is the reward of disbelievers.

4. Quran 2:193 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

193 And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah. But if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers.

Note: Near-identical to 8:39. The verse continues: "if they desist, then let there be no hostility except against wrong-doers."

5. Quran 2:216 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

216 Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you; but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knoweth, ye know not.

Note: Faraj treats it, with 9:5, as a verse that cancels earlier verses of restraint.18

6. Quran 2:244 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

244 Fight in the way of Allah, and know that Allah is Hearer, Knower.

7. Quran 4:74 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

74 Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward.

Note: Part of the passage (4:74–76) used most often in Holbrook's study of 30 militant texts.13

8. Quran 4:75–76 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

75 How should ye not fight for the cause of Allah and of the feeble among men and of the women and the children who are crying: Our Lord! Bring us forth from out this town of which the people are oppressors! Oh, give us from thy presence some protecting friend! Oh, give us from Thy presence some defender!

76 Those who believe do battle for the cause of Allah; and those who disbelieve do battle for the cause of idols. So fight the minions of the devil. Lo! the devil's strategy is ever weak.

Note: Cited in the 1998 World Islamic Front fatwa and in both of Azzam's founding books.1619

9. Quran 4:84 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

84 So fight (O Muhammad) in the way of Allah Thou art not taxed (with the responsibility for anyone) except thyself - and urge on the believers. Peradventure Allah will restrain the might of those who disbelieve. Allah is stronger in might and stronger in inflicting punishment.

Note: Used in 6 of the 30 militant texts in Holbrook's study.13

10. Quran 4:95 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

95 Those of the believers who sit still, other than those who have a (disabling) hurt, are not on an equality with those who strive in the way of Allah with their wealth and lives. Allah hath conferred on those who strive with their wealth and lives a rank above the sedentary. Unto each Allah hath promised good, but He hath bestowed on those who strive a great reward above the sedentary;

11. Quran 8:39 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

39 And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.

Note: The most cited verse in Islamic State's Dabiq (12 times). Also cited by Faraj and Azzam.1218

12. Quran 8:65 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

65 O Prophet! Exhort the believers to fight. If there be of you twenty steadfast they shall overcome two hundred, and if there be of you a hundred (steadfast) they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are a folk without intelligence.

13. Quran 9:5 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

5 Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Note: The "verse of the sword" (ayat al-sayf). It is part of an ultimatum to Arabian polytheist tribes (9:1–5). Verse 9:4 exempts tribes that kept their treaties, and 9:6 orders protection for any idolater who asks for it. Ibn Kathir and many classical exegetes held that it abrogated earlier verses of peace. Cited by bin Laden (1996, 1998), Azzam, Faraj, al-Adnani and Dabiq.151623

14. Quran 9:12–14 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

12 And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief - Lo! they have no binding oaths - in order that they may desist.

13 Will ye not fight a folk who broke their solemn pledges, and purposed to drive out the messenger and did attack you first? What! Fear ye them? Now Allah hath more right that ye should fear Him, if ye are believers

14 Fight them! Allah will chastise them at your hands, and He will lay them low and give you victory over them, and He will heal the breasts of folk who are believers.

29 Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, and forbid not that which Allah hath forbidden by His messenger, and follow not the Religion of Truth, until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low.

Note: The basis of the jizya (poll tax) on Jews and Christians under Muslim rule. Used by Qutb for the final stage of jihad.21

16. Quran 9:36 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

36 Lo! the number of the months with Allah is twelve months by Allah's ordinance in the day that He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred: that is the right religion. So wrong not yourselves in them. And wage war on all of the idolaters as they are waging war on all of you. And know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him).

Note: Cited in the 1998 fatwa and by Qutb. Azzam calls this verse, rather than 9:5, "the Verse of the Sword".1621

17. Quran 9:38–39 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

38 O ye who believe! What aileth you that when it is said unto you: Go forth in the way of Allah, ye are bowed down to the ground with heaviness. Take ye pleasure in the life of the world rather than in the Hereafter? The comfort of the life of the world is but little in the Hereafter.

39 If ye go not forth He will afflict you with a painful doom, and will choose instead of you a folk other than you. Ye cannot harm Him at all. Allah is Able to do all things.

Note: Cited 5 times in Dabiq.12

21. Quran 47:4 · Surah Muhammad · Medinan

4 Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.

60 Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others beside them whom ye know not. Allah knoweth them. Whatsoever ye spend in the way of Allah it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged.

Note: Among the most quoted verses in jihadist material, according to the Tony Blair Institute; cited by Awlaki and Abu Mus'ab al-Suri. Other translations render "dismay" as "strike terror into".1420

31. Quran 8:67 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

67 It is not for any prophet to have captives until he hath made slaughter in the land. Ye desire the lure of this world and Allah desireth (for you) the Hereafter, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

32. Quran 4:89 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

89 They long that ye should disbelieve even as they disbelieve, that ye may be upon a level (with them). So choose not friends from them till they forsake their homes in the way of Allah; if they turn back (to enmity) then take them and kill them wherever ye find them, and choose no friend nor helper from among them,

33. Quran 33:60–62 · Surah Al-Ahzaab · Medinan

60 If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease, and the alarmists in the city do not cease, We verily shall urge thee on against them, then they will be your neighbours in it but a little while.

61 Accursed, they will be seized wherever found and slain with a (fierce) slaughter.

62 That was the way of Allah in the case of those who passed away of old; thou wilt not find for the way of Allah aught of power to change.

34. Quran 47:35 · Surah Muhammad · Medinan

35 So do not falter and cry out for peace when ye (will be) the uppermost, and Allah is with you, and He will not grudge (the reward of) your actions.

35. Quran 4:101–102 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

101 And when ye go forth in the land, it is no sin for you to curtail (your) worship if ye fear that those who disbelieve may attack you. In truth the disbelievers are an open enemy to you.

102 And when thou (O Muhammad) art among them and arrangest (their) worship for them, let only a party of them stand with thee (to worship) and let them take their arms. Then when they have performed their prostrations let them fall to the rear and let another party come that hath not worshipped and let them worship with thee, and let them take their precaution and their arms. Those who disbelieve long for you to neglect your arms and your baggage that they may attack you once for all. It is no sin for you to lay aside your arms, if rain impedeth you or ye are sick. But take your precaution. Lo! Allah prepareth for the disbelievers shameful punishment.

8.3 Martyrdom, reward and spoils (8 passages) #

Passages promising paradise to those killed fighting, and governing the division of spoils.

36. Quran 9:111 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

111 Lo! Allah hath bought from the believers their lives and their wealth because the Garden will be theirs: they shall fight in the way of Allah and shall slay and be slain. It is a promise which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. Who fulfilleth His covenant better than Allah? Rejoice then in your bargain that ye have made, for that is the supreme triumph.

37. Quran 3:169–170 · Surah Aal-i-Imraan · Medinan

169 Think not of those, who are slain in the way of Allah, as dead. Nay, they are living. With their Lord they have provision.

170 Jubilant (are they) because of that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty, rejoicing for the sake of those who have not joined them but are left behind: That there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

38. Quran 2:154 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

154 And call not those who are slain in the way of Allah "dead." Nay, they are living, only ye perceive not.

39. Quran 3:157–158 · Surah Aal-i-Imraan · Medinan

157 And what though ye be slain in Allah's way or die therein? Surely pardon from Allah and mercy are better than all that they amass.

158 What though ye be slain or die, when unto Allah ye are gathered?

40. Quran 47:5–6 · Surah Muhammad · Medinan

5 He will guide them and improve their state,

6 And bring them in unto the Garden which He hath made known to them.

41. Quran 8:1 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

1 They ask thee (O Muhammad) of the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and the messenger, so keep your duty to Allah, and adjust the matter of your difference, and obey Allah and His messenger, if ye are (true) believers.

42. Quran 8:41 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

41 And know that whatever ye take as spoils of war, lo! a fifth thereof is for Allah, and for the messenger and for the kinsman (who hath need) and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, if ye believe in Allah and that which We revealed unto Our slave on the Day of Discrimination, the day when the two armies met. And Allah is Able to do all things.

43. Quran 8:69 · Surah Al-Anfaal · Medinan

69 Now enjoy what ye have won, as lawful and good, and keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

8.4 Muhammad's campaigns in the Quran (10 passages) #

Passages that refer to specific battles and events in Muhammad's wars.

44. Quran 3:123–126 · Surah Aal-i-Imraan · Medinan

123 Allah had already given you the victory at Badr, when ye were contemptible. So observe your duty to Allah in order that ye may be thankful.

124 When thou didst say unto the believers: Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should support you with three thousand angels sent down (to your help)?

125 Nay, but if ye persevere, and keep from evil, and (the enemy) attack you suddenly, your Lord will help you with five thousand angels sweeping on.

126 Allah ordained this only as a message of good cheer for you, and that thereby your hearts might be at rest - Victory cometh only from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise -

Note: Refers to the Battle of Badr (624).

45. Quran 3:152–155 · Surah Aal-i-Imraan · Medinan

152 Allah verily made good His promise unto you when ye routed them by His leave, until (the moment) when your courage failed you, and ye disagreed about the order and ye disobeyed, after He had shown you that for which ye long. Some of you desired the world, and some of you desired the Hereafter. Therefore He made you flee from them, that He might try you. Yet now He hath forgiven you. Allah is a Lord of Kindness to believers.

153 When ye climbed (the hill) and paid no heed to anyone, while the messenger, in your rear, was calling you (to fight). Therefor He rewarded you grief for (his) grief, that (He might teach) you not to sorrow either for that which ye missed or for that which befell you. Allah is Informed of what ye do.

154 Then, after grief, He sent down security for you. As slumber did it overcome a party of you, while (the other) party, who were anxious on their own account, thought wrongly of Allah, the thought of ignorance. They said: Have we any part in the cause? Say (O Muhammad): The cause belongeth wholly to Allah. They hide within themselves (a thought) which they reveal not unto thee, saying: Had we had any part in the cause we should not have been slain here. Say: Even though ye had been in your houses, those appointed to be slain would have gone forth to the places where they were to lie. (All this hath been) in order that Allah might try what is in your breasts and prove what is in your hearts. Allah is Aware of what is hidden in the breasts (of men).

155 Lo! those of you who turned back on the day when the two hosts met, Satan alone it was who caused them to backslide, because of some of that which they have earned. Now Allah hath forgiven them. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Clement.

46. Quran 33:9–11 · Surah Al-Ahzaab · Medinan

9 O ye who believe! Remember Allah's favour unto you when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a great wind and hosts ye could not see. And Allah is ever Seer of what ye do.

10 When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when eyes grew wild and hearts reached to the throats, and ye were imagining vain thoughts concerning Allah.

11 There were the believers sorely tried, and shaken with a mighty shock.

47. Quran 33:25–27 · Surah Al-Ahzaab · Medinan

25 And Allah repulsed the disbelievers in their wrath; they gained no good. Allah averted their attack from the believers. Allah is ever Strong, Mighty.

26 And He brought those of the People of the Scripture who supported them down from their strongholds, and cast panic into their hearts. Some ye slew, and ye made captive some.

27 And He caused you to inherit their land and their houses and their wealth, and land ye have not trodden. Allah is ever Able to do all things.

Note: Refers to the Banu Qurayza (627): "some ye slew, and ye made captive some".36

48. Quran 59:2–5 · Surah Al-Hashr · Medinan

2 He it is Who hath caused those of the People of the Scripture who disbelieved to go forth from their homes unto the first exile. Ye deemed not that they would go forth, while they deemed that their strongholds would protect them from Allah. But Allah reached them from a place whereof they recked not, and cast terror in their hearts so that they ruined their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So learn a lesson, O ye who have eyes!

3 And if Allah had not decreed migration for them, He verily would have punished them in the world, and theirs in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.

4 That is because they were opposed to Allah and His messenger; and whoso is opposed to Allah, (for him) verily Allah is stern in reprisal.

5 Whatsoever palm-trees ye cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by Allah's leave, in order that He might confound the evil-livers.

49. Quran 9:25–26 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

25 Allah hath given you victory on many fields and on the day of Huneyn, when ye exulted in your multitude but it availed you naught, and the earth, vast as it is, was straitened for you; then ye turned back in flight;

26 Then Allah sent His peace of reassurance down upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts ye could not see, and punished those who disbelieved. Such is the reward of disbelievers.

50. Quran 48:18–19 · Surah Al-Fath · Medinan

18 Allah was well pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance unto thee beneath the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, and He sent down peace of reassurance on them, and hath rewarded them with a near victory;

51. Quran 9:1–3 · Surah At-Tawba · Medinan

1 Freedom from obligation (is proclaimed) from Allah and His messenger toward those of the idolaters with whom ye made a treaty.

2 Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah and that Allah will confound the disbelievers (in His Guidance).

3 And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve,

52. Quran 2:217 · Surah Al-Baqara · Medinan

217 They question thee (O Muhammad) with regard to warfare in the sacred month. Say: Warfare therein is a great (transgression), but to turn (men) from the way of Allah, and to disbelieve in Him and in the Inviolable Place of Worship, and to expel His people thence, is a greater with Allah; for persecution is worse than killing. And they will not cease from fighting against you till they have made you renegades from your religion, if they can. And whoso becometh a renegade and dieth in his disbelief: such are they whose works have fallen both in the world and the Hereafter. Such are rightful owners of the Fire: they will abide therein.

54. Quran 3:28 · Surah Aal-i-Imraan · Medinan

28 Let not the believers take disbelievers for their friends in preference to believers. Whoso doeth that hath no connection with Allah unless (it be) that ye but guard yourselves against them, taking (as it were) security. Allah biddeth you beware (only) of Himself. Unto Allah is the journeying.

55. Quran 5:51 · Surah Al-Maaida · Medinan

51 O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.

56. Quran 60:1 · Surah Al-Mumtahana · Medinan

1 O ye who believe! Choose not My enemy and your enemy for allies. Do ye give them friendship when they disbelieve in that truth which hath come unto you, driving out the messenger and you because ye believe in Allah, your Lord? If ye have come forth to strive in My way and seeking My good pleasure, (show them not friendship). Do ye show friendship unto them in secret, when I am Best Aware of what ye hide and what ye proclaim? And whosoever doeth it among you, he verily hath strayed from the right way.

57. Quran 58:22 · Surah Al-Mujaadila · Medinan

22 Thou wilt not find folk who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even though they be their fathers or their sons or their brethren or their clan. As for such, He hath written faith upon their hearts and hath strengthened them with a Spirit from Him, and He will bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide. Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. They are Allah's party. Lo! is it not Allah's party who are the successful?

64. Quran 48:29 · Surah Al-Fath · Medinan

29 Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. Thou (O Muhammad) seest them bowing and falling prostrate (in worship), seeking bounty from Allah and (His) acceptance. The mark of them is on their foreheads from the traces of prostration. Such is their likeness in the Torah and their likeness in the Gospel - like as sown corn that sendeth forth its shoot and strengtheneth it and riseth firm upon its stalk, delighting the sowers - that He may enrage the disbelievers with (the sight of) them. Allah hath promised, unto such of them as believe and do good works, forgiveness and immense reward.

178 O ye who believe! Retaliation is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered; the freeman for the freeman, and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. And for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (injured) brother, prosecution according to usage and payment unto him in kindness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. He who transgresseth after this will have a painful doom.

179 And there is life for you in retaliation, O men of understanding, that ye may ward off (evil).

71. Quran 4:34 · Surah An-Nisaa · Medinan

34 Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.
